Camping Along The Ice Edge - Baffin Island
Springtime at the ice edge is dubbed ‘the line of life’ The 24-hour sun light brings an explosion of photo plankton in open polar seas, a thick soup of which seabirds and marine mammals alike feed. June marks the arrival of hundreds of thousands of seabirds, including Thick-billed murres, Northern fulmars, Common eiders, and Dovekies. We may also see Narwhal, Beluga and Bowhead whale while seals and polar bear also frequent this sea ice realm.
This expedition will travel over the sea ice from Pond Inlet in full view of Bylot Island and Sirmilik National Park. Here, on one of nature’s most amazing landscapes, we will set up two different base camps where we hope to not only observe the marine wildlife at the ice edge but hike to breathtaking sea bird colonies along our passage. The scenery is outstanding-a dramatic landscape of icebergs frozen in place back dropped by mountain cliffs. This classic Arctic adventure is an unparalleled opportunity not to be missed.

Day 1: Morning flight from Ottawa to Pond Inlet, via Iqaluit. Upon arrival, transport to local hotel for welcome supper and group orientation. (D / Hotel included)
Day 2: Depart Pond Inlet after breakfast by snowmobile and komatik towards the floe-edge area. Establishment of base camp.
Day 3 - 5: Base camp near the ice edge area. Ski and hike to bird cliffs, icebergs, ice edge. B/L/D and camping.
Day 6: Move base camp to a different location. B/L D and camping.
Day 7-8: Base camp near the ice edge area. Ski and hike to bird cliffs, icebergs, ice edge. B/L/D and camping.
Day 9: Return journey to Pond Inlet by ski doo and komatik. B/L/D and hotel accommodation.
Day 10: Morning free to explore Pond Inlet before flights to Ottawa via Iqaluit departure from Pond Inlet to Iqaluit. B included
